API Gravity and Sulfur: How Crude Quality Determines What a Barrel Is Actually Worth

Two numbers printed on every crude assay, density and sulfur, explain why a barrel of Alberta bitumen and a barrel of West Texas Intermediate sell tens of dollars apart even when both are called oil.

Pull the assay sheet on any cargo of crude and two lines settle most of the argument about price before a trader opens his mouth. The first is API gravity, a density figure. The second is sulfur, given as a percentage by weight. West Texas Intermediate carries an API of roughly 39.6 and about 0.24 percent sulfur. Western Canadian Select comes in near 20.9 API and 3.5 percent sulfur. Both are crude oil. In the second quarter of 2026, the gap between them ran past twenty dollars a barrel. That spread is not scarcity. It is chemistry meeting the plumbing and steel of the refineries that have to process the stuff.

What the two numbers actually measure

API gravity is an inverted density scale defined by the American Petroleum Institute. The formula is simple: API gravity equals 141.5 divided by the specific gravity of the oil, minus 131.5. Water sits at 10. Anything above 10 floats on water; the higher the number, the lighter and thinner the crude. Light crude is rich in the short-chain molecules that boil off into gasoline, naphtha and jet fuel with relatively little coaxing. Heavy crude, down in the low twenties and below, is thick with long-chain residue that wants to become asphalt and coke unless a refiner spends money to break it apart.

Sulfur is the second axis, and it runs independently of gravity. The industry line is that crude above 0.5 percent sulfur is sour and below is sweet. Sulfur is a contaminant. It corrodes equipment, poisons catalysts, and if it rides through into finished fuel it violates the tight limits regulators put on diesel and gasoline. Getting it out means hydrotreating, which means hydrogen, pressure, and capital. So every barrel lives somewhere on a grid: light or heavy on one axis, sweet or sour on the other. The most valuable corner is light and sweet, because it is the cheapest to turn into the products people pay the most for.

Where the benchmarks fall

The named grades traders quote are just fixed points on that grid. WTI, the U.S. benchmark, is light and sweet: about 39.6 API, 0.24 percent sulfur. Brent, the North Sea grade that prices much of the world's seaborne crude, is close behind at roughly 38.3 API and about 0.37 percent sulfur, a hair less sweet than WTI but firmly in the same premium corner.

Move east and the quality drops. Dubai crude, the reference for Gulf barrels heading to Asia, sits near 31 API with sulfur around 2 percent. That makes it several times more sour than Brent, which is exactly why it needs its own benchmark rather than pricing off the light-sweet grades. Then come the heavy sour barrels. Mexico's Maya runs about 21 to 22 API and 3.4 percent sulfur. Western Canadian Select is a near twin on the assay, roughly 20.9 API and 3.5 percent sulfur. WCS is not a single wellhead crude at all; it is a blend of around twenty streams, conventional heavy oil, in-situ bitumen from places like Cold Lake, synthetic crude from upgraders, and condensate diluent, all mixed at the Hardisty terminal in Alberta. Canadian Natural Resources alone contributes close to 45 percent of the pool.

Why complex refineries want the cheap, ugly barrel

Here is the part that trips up people who assume the premium grade is always the smart buy. A simple refinery, one built to run light sweet crude, hates heavy sour. Feed it Maya or WCS and it produces a slate heavy in low-value residual fuel and struggles to hit sulfur specs. For that plant, the light-sweet premium is worth paying.

A complex refinery is a different animal. Bolt on a coker and it can take the heavy bottom of the barrel, the residue that a simple plant sells cheap as fuel oil, and crack it into more gasoline and diesel. Add enough hydrotreating and it can strip the sulfur to meet any spec. Those units cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and once you have paid for them, you want them fed. The way you justify the capital is by buying the discounted heavy sour barrel and capturing the spread between what you paid for the ugly crude and what you sell the clean products for. The Gulf Coast is stacked with exactly these plants. U.S. refineries average around 9.5 on the Nelson Complexity Index, the standard yardstick for how much upgrading capacity a plant carries; Canadian refineries average closer to 8.2. That difference in steel is a large reason heavy Canadian crude has to travel south to find a buyer rather than clearing at home.

Breaking down the differential

The WCS discount to WTI is not one number; it is a stack. Analysts typically split it into a quality piece and a transport piece. The quality piece, the pure penalty for lower refining yield, runs somewhere in the range of eight to twelve dollars a barrel, reflecting that a heavy sour barrel gives up gasoline and middle distillate to residue and demands more processing. That component is relatively stable because it tracks refining economics rather than the day's headlines.

The transport piece is where the volatility lives. Hardisty is landlocked, sitting a long way from the big refining hubs. Pipeline tariffs from Hardisty to Cushing run roughly five to seven dollars a barrel, and to the Gulf Coast eight to eleven. Add that to the quality discount and you get a baseline differential. But when Alberta production presses against the limit of available pipeline and rail capacity, the price does something worse than reflect freight cost: it collapses. Producers with a barrel and nowhere to send it will sell at almost any discount rather than shut in a well. That is how the WCS-WTI gap blew past 45 dollars in late 2018, and it is why the differential widened to about 20.25 dollars in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up from 10.65 a year earlier, even though the underlying chemistry of the crude never changed.

Reading the spread

So when you see a heavy sour grade trading twenty dollars under WTI, resist the reflex to call it a bad barrel. Strip the number apart. Some of that discount is real and permanent, the yield penalty baked into a 21-API, 3.5-percent-sulfur crude that a Gulf Coast coker is delighted to pay for because the spread feeds its most expensive units. The rest is geography and pipeline math that can swing hard from one quarter to the next as Canadian production climbs toward 4.85 million barrels a day and fights for egress. The two numbers on the assay tell you what the barrel is. The differential tells you where the steel and the pipe happen to be that week. Confuse the two and you will misread the entire market.
