The API Gravity Ladder: How Light-Sweet and Heavy-Sour Crudes Command Different Prices

Two numbers on an assay sheet, density and sulfur, decide which refineries can run a barrel and how many dollars separate it from the headline price.

When a trader quotes you "oil at $70," ask which oil. There is no such thing as a barrel of generic crude. A cargo of West Texas Intermediate and a cargo of Mexican Maya are as different as premium unleaded and roofing tar, and the gap between them is written in two numbers that sit at the top of every assay sheet: API gravity and sulfur content. Those numbers, not the headline benchmark price, determine which refinery can even swallow the barrel and what the barrel is actually worth once it gets there.

What API gravity and sulfur actually measure

API gravity is a density scale invented by the American Petroleum Institute, and it runs backwards from the way most people think about weight. It is an inverse measure of density relative to water. Water sits at 10 degrees API. Anything lighter than water floats above that mark, so a crude at 40 degrees API is lighter, thinner, and more valuable than one at 20 degrees. High API means light. Low API means heavy. The EIA's working line is roughly this: above 35 degrees is light, below 25 degrees is heavy, with a medium band in between.

Sulfur is the second axis, and it is blunt. The EIA calls a crude "sweet" when it carries less than 1 percent sulfur by weight and "sour" when it carries more than 1 percent. That single percentage point matters because sulfur is a contaminant a refinery has to strip out before it can sell the fuel. It corrodes equipment, poisons catalysts, and shows up in the finished product as pollution that regulators do not allow. Every pound of it is a cost.

Put the two axes together and you get a grid. Light-sweet crude sits in the golden corner: high API, low sulfur, easy to refine into gasoline and diesel. Heavy-sour crude sits in the opposite corner: dense, dirty, and cheap.

WTI, Urals, Maya: three rungs on the ladder

The benchmarks make the spectrum concrete. WTI, the U.S. marker, runs around 39.6 degrees API with roughly 0.24 percent sulfur, which is why it is the textbook light-sweet grade. Brent sits close by at about 38.3 degrees and 0.37 percent sulfur. Both refine cheaply and yield a lot of the high-value light products refineries want.

Drop down a rung and you hit the medium-sour tier. Russia's Urals export blend averages around 31 degrees API and roughly 1.3 percent sulfur, though the gravity drifts between about 31 and 33 degrees and the sulfur can swing anywhere from 0.8 to 1.8 percent depending on the mix flowing to the port. It is a blend by design, Western Siberian crude cut with heavier, higher-sulfur barrels from the Volga-Urals region, and its yield structure reflects that: usable diesel and gas oil, but nearly half the barrel comes off as atmospheric residue that needs further work.

At the bottom of the ladder is heavy-sour crude like Mexican Maya, Iraq's Basrah Heavy, and Canada's Western Canada Select, a diluted oil-sands blend. These are dense and loaded with sulfur. A simple refinery cannot make a full slate of clean fuel out of them without producing a mountain of low-value residue. That constraint is exactly why they trade at a discount, and the discount is real money. On the U.S. Gulf Coast, Louisiana Light Sweet has historically carried a premium of roughly $5 to $9 a barrel over Maya. In the Midwest, WTI has run $10 to $13 a barrel above Western Canada Select. Those spreads move with the market, but the direction never flips: the heavy-sour barrel is always the cheap one.

Why a coker turns cheap crude into fat margins

Here is the part that separates the refiners who make money on heavy-sour crude from the ones who cannot touch it. A refinery is not one machine. It is a chain of them, and the more advanced units you bolt on, the uglier a barrel you can profitably run.

The industry scores this with the Nelson Complexity Index. A plant that does nothing but atmospheric distillation, boiling crude into cuts and selling what falls out, rates a 1.0. Every additional processing unit, a coker, a hydrocracker, a hydrotreater, adds to the score based on its cost and capacity relative to that base distillation. The average U.S. refinery lands around 8.7 on that scale. That number is a measure of how much abuse a refinery can take from its feedstock.

The workhorse for heavy-sour crude is the coker. When you distill a heavy barrel, a huge fraction, sometimes close to half, comes off as the black residue at the bottom of the barrel that a simple refinery has to dump into low-value fuel oil or asphalt. A coker takes that residue and cracks it under heat and pressure into lighter streams that can be upgraded into gasoline and diesel, leaving petroleum coke behind. Hydrotreaters then scrub out the sulfur to hit product specs.

The economics follow directly. A complex refinery buys the discounted heavy-sour barrel, runs it through the coker and hydrocracker, and ends up with roughly the same clean-product slate a simple refinery gets from expensive light-sweet crude, but it paid $10-plus less for the feedstock. That gap is the prize. It is why Gulf Coast refiners spent billions on coking capacity: they are not buying oil, they are buying the spread between cheap ugly crude and clean finished fuel. A simple refinery is stuck paying up for sweet barrels because it has no way to salvage the bottom of a sour one.

How IMO 2020 rewired the demand for sulfur

For decades, all that heavy-sour residue had a home: ships. Ocean-going vessels burned high-sulfur fuel oil, the cheapest, dirtiest cut of the barrel, because nobody made them do otherwise. That ended on January 1, 2020, when the International Maritime Organization slashed the sulfur limit for marine fuel on the open ocean from 3.5 percent to 0.5 percent. The change was global and instantaneous, which is why it hit the market harder than any of the earlier step-downs.

The effect was to punch a hole in demand for exactly the product heavy-sour crude produces the most of. Analysts expected high-sulfur fuel oil supply to effectively lose about half its market as ships switched to compliant low-sulfur fuel and marine gasoil. That, in turn, pushed demand toward low-sulfur distillates and toward the sweet crudes that yield them cleanly.

Forecasts going into the rule saw upward pressure of around $2 a barrel on light-sweet crude in 2020 and a widening of the sweet-to-sour spread as the market repriced sulfur. The logic was simple. If the world suddenly needs less high-sulfur residue, the crude that makes a lot of it is worth less, and the crude that avoids it is worth more, unless you own a coker capable of destroying that residue and turning it into clean fuel anyway. IMO 2020 did not just raise sweet-crude prices. It handed the most complex refineries a bigger advantage, because they could keep buying the newly cheaper sour barrels and upgrade their way around the rule.

Read the assay before the ticker

The takeaway for anyone watching this market is to stop reading the flat price as if it means anything on its own. A barrel's value is a function of what is inside it and who can process it. Light and sweet is easy money for a simple plant and commands a premium. Heavy and sour is a discount that only a deep-conversion refinery can turn into profit. The spread between them is where refiners actually live, and it moves on sulfur rules, coking capacity, and which grades are flowing, not on the number that scrolls across the screen. Before you trust the ticker, read the assay.
